ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS

FOREST SCHOOL / OUR ENVIRONMENT

The environment is very important to 1125 CIC and we want to provide projects that enable young people to learn about nature and how to respect it.

FOREST SCHOOL

We run Forest schools during the year for different age ranges so young people have the opportunity to get out in

nature and learn life skills. During the sessions the group get to learn about biodiversity, use a variety of hand tools, and be able to construct items from outdoor materials, build a temporary

shelter and will learn how to build and extinguish a fire.

‘Young people will benefit holistically from connecting with nature by observing and leaning how they can protect their natural environment’

‘The group will also be given the opportunity to develop vital mindful techniques that they can practice at home’

BIRCH BUDDIES

Birch Buddies' is a forest school for young people aged

11-13 which enables vulnerable and isolated young people

to get outdoors and explore nature. Birch Buddies helps to

get some of the younger group out of the house and into

a safe outdoor environment where they can make friends

and play. The project includes forest schools, outdoor play,

nature walks and talks, fire lighting, cooking healthy food on

the fire, using outdoor tools, den building, nature arts, and learn about the environment.

OUR ECO PLEDGE

Our environment is very important to 1125 CIC.

In 2022 we worked with an Eco-specialist and 1125 CIC workers attended the Carbon Literacy for Leaders course and made pledges.

‘1125 CIC pledge to reduce our carbon footprint’

As a company we pledge to make environmentally conscious decisions to reduce our carbon footprint and aspire to have a small carbon neutral community space by 2032.

We pledge to be an advocate for reducing, reusing and recycling and promote healthy meals making young people aware of meat and dairy free recipes. We will promote food waste schemes and grow vegetable and plant based food in the community, buying resources locally so we reduce international carbon emissions. In the summer months we will promote car free days and try to utilise bicycles, walking or public transport when we can.

Youth leader ‘During Our Eco Pledge we visited local community gardens and learnt about composting and how to grow food. We learnt about crops and how they are grouped into legume, root vegetable, leafy greens and fruit bearing and that we should use rotation planting to help avoid pests and diseases.’

Lindsay Apsley ‘We learnt about permaculture and how to develop ecosystems that are sustainable and self-sufficient. We looked at the way natural resources can be used to protect the plants by using hazel poles and twine and had a lesson about permaculture and how to create a holistic and harmonious ecosystem. We loved looking around Garth Hillside Organic Gardens in Glyn Ceiriog - we even saw a slow worm!’

Youth leader ‘We were told to work with nature and not against it by enhancing the local biodiversity.’

We would like to say a big thankyou to the wonderful organisations that have funded these projects.
